TUGAS-3 : TEFL 2


1.      The availability of modern technology and internet enables EFL teachers to utilize (memanfaatkan) real and authentic materials in teaching reading and writing. If you are teaching elementary school students of English as a foreign language, how can you use computer to teach writing to your students ?
ANSWER:
If i were a teacher of elementary school i would like to give my students a writing material in completion (spelling form) using media computer. The purpose of this exercise is to train students in observing the shape of words that they have learned in listening or speaking. In completion exercise one or two letters are omitted and students should fill the blanks to form a correct word spelled.
Example: first i will display a picture with the word which one or two letters are omitted i also provide a spelled sound of a word. The students should fill the blank with the correct word spelled.

2.      Develop the topic below for your speaking class, by using Harmer’s technique (Engage, Activate, and Study). Topic: Apologizing because you have made your friend embarrassed.
ANSWER:
Topic: Apologizing because you have made your friend embarrassed
Engage:
a)      Introducing the material by asking two of the student boys to come forward. Ask the student A to mess student B’s hair.
b)      Ask the student B about what he feels about his hair performance? Is he shy/ embarrassed? What does he feel to student A? Is he angry / mad? Ask the student A what he’s going to do after messing student B’s hair?
c)      Ask all the students to imagine if they are in the position of student B and ask what they feel? After that ask all students to imagine if they are in position of student A and what they’re going to do.
d)     Explaining the material about “Apologizing because you have made your friend embarrassed”. Then give the students  a list of apology expressions and the example of dialogue.
Activate:
a)      Divide the class into several group, each group consists of 4 students. Ask them to make a conversation about “Apologizing because you have made your friend embarrassed”. And practice it with their group.
b)      Ask each group to come forward and practice the dialogue in front of the class.
Study:
Ask a student from each group to tell how to apologize.

3.      For what reasons do EFL teachers teach writing?
ANSWER:
Teaching English involves teaching four skills, they are speaking, writing, reading and listening. All those skills are needed in mastering English. They are related to each other. Writing is as important as speaking. They both are the way to communicate. There are so many reasons why writing is taught in EFL class.
a)      As a means of communication. Learners should know how to communicate through letter. Such as writing letter, memo, e-mail, and others.
b)      Making an essay. The ability of writing an essay is important. The learners can share their idea through essay.
c)      Writing a paragraph. Students can develop their English skill through writing paragraph such as descriptive, narrative, spoof etc.
d)     Controlling the students’ development. Through writing, we as an EFL teachers can see the development if our students through their writing. We can see the development of their idea exploring, grammar, sentence organizing, vocabularies and others.

4.      What kind of benefits do students get from “Dictation” technique used by the teacher in teaching writing?
ANSWER:
Dictation is a good exercise for our students to develop the writing skill from what they hear. In dictation exercise our students write what they hear in the conventional orthography. In this exercise our students learn to associate the spoken and the written words.
