TUTORIAL TASK 2- TUGAS-2 INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTIC

        Count the number of phonemes available in each of the following words.
a.       write             : three phonemes (r, ai, t)
b.      involve         : six phonemes (i, n, v, a, l, v)
c.       thing              : three phonemes (th, i, ng)
d.      question      : seven phonemes (k, w, e, s, ch, e, n)
e.      define           : five phonemes (d, i, f, ai, n)

        Explain each of the following English word formation processes and give five examples of each.
a.       Lexical morphemes : word which has a sense or meaning in itself. Ex: go, time, good, table, borrow.
b.      Grammatical morphemes: word which doesn't have certain meaning and doesn't really have a sense. Ex: after, as, the, than, with.
c.       Blending      : the word formation process created by combining two or more words. Ex : (situation+commedy=sitcom), (spoon+fork=spork), (web+seminar=webinar), (camera+recorder=camcorder), (information+intertainment=infotainment)
d.      clipping         : the word formation process in which a word is reduced or shorthened without changing the meaning. Ex : (influenaza:flu), (examination:exam), (mathematic:math), (photograph:photo), (laboratory:lab)
e.      Backformation          : forming a new word by reducing another type of word (forming a verb by reducing a noun). Ex: (abbreviate from abbreviation), (execute from execution), (improvise from improvisation), (organize from organization), (act from action).

        Differentiate between coinage and borrowing and give three examples of each.
a.       Coinage        : the word which is originally created by naming of something or product. for example, Sanyo, people will say Sanyo to other product which has the same function, jeans, google, heroin, escalator
b.      Borrowing   : the word which is adopted from another language. Ex: (murder:French), (galore:Irish), (algebra:Arabic), (pizza:Italian), (near:sunskirt)
