TUGAS 3 – APPRECIATION OF LITERARY WORKS

TUGAS 3  – APPRECIATION OF LITERARY WORKS
Read the following poems carefully, and then answer the questions that follow.
THERE IS NO FRIGATE LIKE A BOOK
Emily Dickinson
There is no frigate like a book
to take us lands away.
Nor like coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears the human soul!
Questions
  1. What is the subject of the poem?
ANSWER: book.
  1. What is the theme of the poem?
The poem explains the precise awesomeness of reading by comparing a book to various modes of transportation. This string of comparisons reminds us of the true joy of reading-the fact that it let us travel far and wide with them in our imaginations, without even paying a cent.
  1. What does the writer compare in his poem?
A book is compared to a "frigate"
A page is compared to a "courser"
  1. What words help develop the tone of the poem?
"How frugal is the Chariot/ that bears the Human soul"
The words show the tone of the poem. The tone of the poem are awe and amazement . The speaker is amazed and just flat-out wowed by how a simple thing like a book can take us far away and this sense of awe is also aimed at the power of the human imagination. we are transported by books because we can imagine ourselves in them, and our ability to travel in our minds and souls is what allows us to escape our circumstances, no matter how bad they are, even if just for a little while.
  1. Paraphrase the poem in your own words in a few sentences.
A book is like the best boat ever, which carries us away to far off lands. reading is even better than taking a ride on this great horse. reading can carry our imagination on a kind of joyride, and it's totally, one hundred percent free.

I SAW A MAN
Stephen Crane
I saw a man pursuing the horizon;
Round and round they sped.
I was disturbed at this;
I accosted the man.
“It is futile,” I said,
“You can never –“
“You lie,” he cried,
And ran on.
accosted= stop to talk with
futile= useless, without purpose

Question: What is the message the poet presents?
The message of the poet is about a man (people) who always feels unsatisfied. He will make efforts to get everything he wants eventhough it is impossible to get. The horizon is a metaphor to mean anything that seems hard or impossible to obtain, and something that many people want, and its pursuing to ideas that many people reject

THE WAYFARER
Stephen Crane
The wayfarer,
Perceiving the pathway to truth,
Was struck with astonishment.
It was thickly grown with weeds.
“Ha,” he said
“I see that no one has passed here
In a long time.”
Later he saw that each weed
Was a singular knife.
“Well,” he mumbled at last,
“Doubtless there are other roads.”
wayfarer= traveler on foot
singular= only one, unusual, unique

Question: What is the message of the poem?
The poem explains that people are always trying to find the truth but they are influenced by the ideas and opinions of others. To find the truth is difficult, you have to face social torture.
