Expressions of Giving & Responding Compliments



Definition of Expression of Compliment
Expression of Compliment is an expression that we say to express or give praise to someone else.
 “compliment is used to “butter up” somebody or to flatter in order to increase good will, for example:
ü  On his/her general appearance
ü   If you notice something new about the person’s appearance
ü  When you visit someone’s house for the first time
ü   When other people do their best
Asking for Compliments
o   What do you think of my new ……, (then)?
o   I think …. suits me. Don’t you?
o   Do you like my (new) …..?

Expressing Compliment
Complementing on onne’s general appearance
Complementing on something new
Complementing on one’s house and food
Complementing on one’s achievement

Dialogue 1
Harsya : What a great Motorcycle you have, Pandu.
Pandu  : Thank you, Harsya. I just finished mdifying it.
Harsya : You mean this is the old motorcycle that you used to drive to school?
Pandu  : Yes, it is.
Harsya : It looks a lot different. What did you do to it?
Pandu  : Not much. I had it paint with a brighter colour and add some new accessories.
Harsya : Great job!
Pandu  : Thanks.

Dialogue 2
Situation 2. Marsya is wearing a new T-shirt. She meets his friend, Ilham. Ilham admires Marsya’s T-shirt
Ilham   : That’s a nice and cute T-shirt you’re wearing.
Marsya: I appreciate you compliment. It was a birthday present from my mother.
Ilham   : Where did your mother buy it?
Marsya: My mother said that she had bought it for me when she was in Singapore
Ilham   : You look beautiful with that expensive T-shirt
Marsya: Thank you but this is a really cheap T-shirt.

Dialogue3
Dewi: Tomi. You look great today! I love your new hair style.
Tomi: Thank you very much, Dewi. You look great, too.
Dewi: Thanks, Tomi. By the way, how was your test? Have you got the result?
Tomi: Yes, I’ve got it. You know what? I have passed for the final test. I’m so happy right now.
Dewi: That’s great. Congratulations! How’s the score?
Tomi: Thanks God. I got the highest score for the test.
Dewi: Wow, that’s amazing. I know you are very smart, Tomi. Well done!
Tomi: Thanks for your compliment, Dewi. You are so kind.
Dewi: Never mind Tomi. It’s my pleasure.
